Maureen Prescott Character Analysis

Fresh out of high school, hungry for a big break in Hollywood, little did Rina Roberts know, her dreams would take a wicked turn. Rina worked all of Senior year to save up money so she could leave her small town life behind. Young and naive, Rina set out on her journey to become an actress. She took a bus and excitement gleamed in her eyes as she approached the Hollywood sign. Not knowing where to go, what to do, she asked around for any connections or contacts to take her in the right direction. Unaware of the twisted intentions that intertwine with fame, Rina allowed her desperation to decide what was next for her. She was introduced to a horror movie director from Sunrise Studios, John Milton, auditioning for a couple of his films. She played in bit parts in some of his movies but things go array when she attends one of his parties late one night.

At his mansion, surrounded by men who whispered empty promises into her ear, promising to give her bigger parts if she "complies". Frightened and cornered, Rina tries to leave the party, realizing she's in over her head, but they won't let her leave. Running for the door, they block her way and that night becomes the worst night she could have ever imagined. The next day, Rina packs up what belongings she has and leaves Hollywood behind without looking back.

No money and nowhere to go, Rina takes a job as a waitress, living in a small dingy motel room with a secret that she tells to no one. Rina keeps to herself, afraid to trust anyone and withholding her secret pregnancy until it is noticeable. She continues to work until the due date, almost hoping that she'll lose the baby. She is ashamed of the baby and of herself but she decides to go full term then put the baby up for adoption.

After the baby is born, she feels no attachment to him so she moves on without regrets or hesitation. While at work, a gentleman strikes up a conversation with her and at first, Rina pays no mind to him at all. He is not her type, she has no interest in him but she can feel how much he is trying to romance her. He leaves sweet notes along with his tips that are far more than they should be but he is enthralled by her. Not wanting to be alone anymore, Rina gives him a chance and introduces himself as Neil Prescott. They have a handful of dates, they connect on a fairly deep level and eventually it gets serious. Neil asks her to marry him and she says yes. Rina leaves her old life behind, chooses to change her name when she marries Neil and becomes Maureen Prescott.

They buy a house together in a small town named Woodsboro, thinking it'd be the perfect place to start a family. A couple years go by, Maureen gives birth to Sidney and the feeling she gets when she looks down at her baby girl is pure joy. Harboring secrets from her past still eating away at her, she is still the perfect housewife, at the beginning. She takes care of Sidney, nurtures her, protects her, adores her, gives her everything that her own mother never gave to her. It changes when Neil has to travel more for his job, leaving Maureen to tend to Sidney alone most of the time.

Maureen, without complaint, did her wifely and motherly duties but felt there was something missing in her life. The excitement drained from her, leaving her with a longing that she couldn't quite decipher. That was until she met Sidney's boyfriend, Billy who introduced her to his father Hank Loomis. They met a couple times at parent meetings at Sidney's high school and it was innocent at first. The attraction for one another was suppressed until one night when Hank called the Prescott residence. Hank appeared to be drunk, as if to muster up the courage to confide his feelings towards Maureen. Neil was away on business and Sidney was over at Tatum's for a sleepover. Hank and Maureen decide to cross a boundary that both of them should not be crossing.

Hank slips one night, coming home real late and Billy's mother catches onto their affair, therefore leaves without explanation. Maureen breaks it off with Hank, feeling a heavy guilt over a family falling apart due to their carelessness. So Maureen avoids Hank as much as she can, concentrating on her family, on Sidney. Not much time passes when Maureen still realizes there's an empty void inside of herself that she just can't fill. Maureen allowed the feeling to be vacant until he came along. He was younger, not too much younger, but he was younger and he lit a fire inside of her that she hadn't felt in a very long time. He paid attention to her every move, her every need, every desire, it made her feel special again.

Running into one another at a grocery store is quite cliche but that's how Maureen met Cotton Weary. He was an out-of-towner so he was brand new to her, exciting. The way he looked at her made her feel like a movie star and that made her heart vibrate with joy. It was instant for them, it was a connection that they just could not ignore. She tried to handle it at first, but his gentle persistence made it all the more enticing for her. Their affair lasted over a year, thinking it was kept quiet for that long......but it was not. There was someone in the shadows, watching and waiting.

An unexpected knock on the door startled Maureen as she was preparing Sidney's clothes for the next school day. She opened the door and it was a young man, he was elated to see her but she was confused. She asked who he was and he uttered the words....."I'm your son". Maureen stared at the young man in disbelief, not prepared to see a ghost from her dark past. He expected her to be excited to see him but instead she just stared at him with wide eyes, frozen. Roman tried to reach out to touch her hand, but Maureen jolted back and gasped "I'm sorry but the woman you're looking for is dead". Maureen slammed the door in Roman's face. Roman stood there in shock, then the hurt sank in, then rage built up and surged through him like electric sparks pulsating through his entire body. Roman stood there a moment more until he saw a girl getting off the bus walking up the stairs to the house. Roman disappeared before Sidney could see him.

Roman sat in silence for days, feeling unwanted and alone until that anger found its way back in. That anger gave him an idea that would help suppress that aching feeling that devastates him with every waking breath. He was going to kill his mother. He felt that he needed a lot of planning so he watched her, he watched her have a love triangle with Hank Loomis and with Cotton Weary. Unable to stay away from both, she played the role like she was in a soap opera herself. Roman recorded everything, stalking Maureen in the shadows. Roman noticed that the one man that was having an affair with Maureen had a son and that gave Roman an even better idea.

Roman tried to get Billy Loomis alone, but he was always hanging out with his best friend, Stu Macher. They were inseparable, opposites at best but nonetheless, like brothers. Roman felt he could manipulate Stu easier so he worked on Stu first. Stu was along for the ride, down for anything that he felt would make Billy approve of him more. He was always seeking Billy's approval, so he talked to Billy and Billy was just not interested. But that was until Roman told Billy why his mother left them. Billy was enraged by this so he agreed to seek revenge on Maureen, despite the fact that she is the mother of his girlfriend, he did not care.

So Roman thought of a way to carry out his demented plan without any of them getting caught. and that was to frame Cotton Weary. So on a night that they knew Sidney would be with her best friend, Tatum and Neil, out of town, they were going in for the kill. They waited outside until Cotton arrived at the Prescott residence, they fooled around and then the trio planned to sneak inside to take his jacket. Having a few drinks, Cotton was drunk, not aware of his missing jacket and decided to call for a cab to get home. When Cotton left, they ambushed Maureen from behind as she stepped out of the shower with a bathrobe freshly wrapped around her dripping body. Stu grabbed her as she struggled to escape his tight hold, Billy gazed into her eyes with such disdain. Stu forced her to the floor, holding her down as Billy was looming over her with a knife gleaming from the bedroom lamp light.

Billy holds the knife to her throat and then says: "My Mom left me because of you". Before Maureen could say a word, Billy plunged the knife into her chest two times. Screaming a shrill scream of pain, Stu clasps his hand over her mouth as he still manages to keep her down. Billy continues to stab her until Maureen was no longer moving. Roman then steps out from the shadows...

"This is going to make one hell of a movie"
